Ok. So I was handed a supposed patch for some registration issues i had been having with a piece of software. i ran it, and installed the bits of it that were missing and such, and well, after a restart of jaws 8 randomly at one point it went like "thanks for using this jaws demo. You have (x) days remaining. To purchase a fully lisense copy, contact you rlocal freedom scientific dealier or call blah blah blah."; where X is a number of days from 10 or less that keep on decreasing. I have already tried several things: The first one was to really test this and see if it was goo at what it said. Might sound retarded, but while jaws was running I moved the date ten or eleven days ahead. I heard a beep, and then no speech. i used NVDA and jaws wasn't there anymore; i ran jfw.exe and the process never started. i then did a system restore and I got jaws working again for maybe 8 more days or so. I tried reformatting and resotring my oEM system from sony (vgn fs 980). I had to create a set of disks to recover at first; I did, and then I resotred the drive and the complete system as it calimed. I am wondering though if any drivers or anything could have gone corrupted after the running of the file or anything like that which is still causing this problem? i haven't really tried getting a legitimate xp cd other than the one that came with my recovery partition wich was burned on a dvd. So, the question is, can files posibly stay or reside into the hard drive even after a reformat and a repartitioning process has been done? Is thre any way to completely erase every bit that exists (even computer identification and serials that are embedcded with OEMs)? or at least overwrite it? If so... how? I really need to get rid of whatever this file caused. I can also send it for analysis, though I don't know where. Thanks in advance.
days? jaws doesn't run for an amount of days, it's suppose2b minutes. what's this patch supposed2fix and where did u get it? not sure about the partition though; u may be able2set the main hd as a slave and delete its partition, don't know if this makes much since lol. hth
ok... i managed to understand the spelling. Anyway, I got it from my friends ftp. If you want yyou can have the file so that you can look at it ... and well, another things is that i got a copy of window eyes borrowed from someone and it will not install... seems like this little ingenious thing blocks all darn screen readers. I'll just have to back up things... to where? and then hmmm, the slave partition would be the same thing as deleting the partitions and creating them again. I'll give a couple of more things a try. This is just... terrrible stuff
Freedom does sell demos that last something like 90 days. Sorry, I don't remember how long they last. They warn you in the documentation for these demos that setting the system date back to give yourself more time with the demo may make it unworkable, bla bla bla!
Sounds like you are trying to get free speech, and, though I wish you well, when you do that you are out on a limb pretty much by yourself.

heh. So ok, i heard of this prog. called D ban and it is supposed to nuke the hard drive. My questoin perhaps wasn't too specific--is there any other place where data stored besides (the temporary) ram, bios and hard drive? or, rather, is there a program or file or anything... that manages to still remain intact even after a reformat? This utility overwrites the disk 3 times acordingly and then i can perform a clean install. I have gotten all the original drivers for the manufacturer's website; although I believe sony definitely needs better support. i also issued a call to fs suppport once more, and though they told me to delete the lisenses and try again, nothing would work; eventually my jfw and the copy of window eyes I had installed both stopped working entirely. I am now left with NVDA for the time it seems, until I can find something else--guess I'd have to get a dif. hd or even laptop.
hmm never heard of a jaws demo that goes by days instead of mins. and, maybe i'm off here, but what about the registry? hth!
The best advice i can give ya is don't ever fuck around with the windows registry unless you know *exactly* what you are doing. That's pretty much the bottom line.
Ok, so the registry really did the trick; I had to mess around with dates to get this alright. I whipped my hard drive and did a clean install of xp. The problem was still there. I again ran this little file and monitored registry and file system changes: The following was reported:

So, I changed the date to January 26th and ran jaws again. It then told me that the version had expired. i decided to go ahead and delete the registry key cryptographynrg and the one on session onformation. I then changed the date back to where t was, restarted and jaws is running fine again; now, since i reinstalled all my drivers I have been getting a video intercept error that says CDERR_general and won't let me install the video intercept properly. Because of this, jawsis yet not able to read combo boxes or read only boxes correctly. I reinstalled my video drivers and it doesn't seem to disappear; searched google and the closest iget is to an upgrade of these drivers as the solution (and thats not the solution for this specific problem). I have the latest intel chipset GM 915 display drivers and am not quite sure what might be causing this other than the drivers.
Yeah, was going to suggest using DBan. I had told a friend about it and he says that it works great. This program will erase everything off the HD, including the OS/partitions, etc. When you do a Windows Format, that isn't a full reformat. That format doesn't get everything off the disk. Cause when you do a Windows format, you can use special software to get the data that was reformated back on your system. Thus, DBan just delets everything off the drive unlike Windows. I don't know how much the program is accessible with screenreaders, sence I have never tried out this product. But give it a shot and see what results you get.
Dom
And as for getting the data back after doing a format using Windows, you could use Get Data back to try and see if it finds anything. It searches for the data on each sector/head of the drive. Its pretty accessible with JAWS. The program is about 70 bucks. You can try a trial version of it from I think this site: runtime.orgwebsite
Jaws is quite the monster when it comes to licenses and video intercept. I suggest just sticking with nvda or one of the free screen readers. As for whiping the drive, I think that Killdisk will do something like 30 or more passes that will scrub the drive. I'm not sure even after that you could still retrieve data. Killdisk has a bootable CD not just a floppy, you know.
heh, flopy worked fine; external USB flopy drives are nice. i am glad my bios was able to recognize the boot order to get the USB first. As for DBan being accessible, there is not a posibility since you must boot from it. It loads a linux kernel, however. I had the screen read to me at all times; although, if you do look inside the text files before booting from the disk there are plaintext files with the dialogs; so you might infer what order they are in and thus go from there. Something makes me think that this all was designed to not work after 2008 and sine jaws 9 is out you would upgrade, right? All of these big screen readers seem to be turning out to do stuff like microsoft. Hell, I'm even thinking of switching to linux now.
So to sum this up, you've installed a crack or what ever which caused things to fuck up. Subsiquent formats have not helped - the problem and its simptons are exactly the same?
Of the top of my head:
Did you download the drivers on the messed up pc? Could be that it was a nasty and it appended itsself to your downloaded exees and sceen as on the new system your gonna install drivers before antyvirus, it could have got there like that.
Very and I mean very unlightly, but have you considdered flashing the bios? I've only come accross one situation where a computer was infected to the point that what ever it was on it had reflashed the bios in 8 years and that was a 95 machine and these days the differences between bioses mean that its very unlightly your comp would boot after a bad reflash.
At the person complaining about formats, thats all the program you linked to does.
Most data is recoverable and its not really important for the windows setup to inshore that the data is unrecoverable as the setup is centered around time and ease of use.
If a company gets stressy about its data beeing stolen then they should just break the drives or use something like blanco.
Fyi when I sold a few of my old drives, I did use killdisk on them and some QUICK testing looked promissing.
Its actually quite worrying how easerly data can be recovered - my old it teacher used to do it all the time - he'd ebay an old pc and get all the personals off it.
Keep us posted.
I am infected by this virus, too. I've reformated like 6 times in the last 3 days... see, I think I know what this virus is about. it gets in your mdr so it stays with a reformat.. then it waits for you to install a jaws crack, and if you do it displays an x days message. if you dont install, its still active and next time you reboot, bang. no jaws, no narrator, no hal, no wineyes. I have a windows xp boot disk that I am about to use, and I just hope it works, beause if it doesn't I don't know what else I can do... I've even whiped with DBan and it didn't work, so I hope the boot disk can slve the problem.
